Can you refill Brother ink cartridges?
It’s possible but we don’t recommend it. You can refill Brother ink cartridges but, in most cases, you would also need to reset or replace the chip on the cartridge so that the printer doesn’t identify it as empty. Refilling printer cartridges used to be a viable option in the days before reliable compatible cartridges, and chips that could tell the printer whether the cartridge had been used before. Today, it is just as economical, considerably easier and a lot less messy to buy compatible cartridges instead.
Can I use a different brand of ink in my Brother printer?
Yes, you can use a different brand of ink in your Brother printer, it’s not necessary to purchase Brother originals. At Printerinks we sell a range of compatible inks and toners which are guaranteed to work with your printer. All of the cartridges shown on this page are suitable, look out for the items described as “compatible” – these cost less and will produce the same results.
Can I just replace black ink in Brother printer?
You can just replace black ink in some Brother printers, but this is not a long-term solution. A printer that takes colour ink cartridges does need to use some of the colour ink to maintain the print head. Running with empty colour cartridges will eventually cause permanent damage to the print head. In the case of the Brother DCP-J1200W printer, the manufacturer recommends no longer than four weeks until you replace the colour cartridges too (less time if you print a lot).
How do I get my Brother printer to accept compatible cartridges?
Your Brother printer should accept any good quality compatible cartridges out of the box. The very cheapest compatible cartridges may have less reliable chips, and consequently higher failure rates – we avoid these products and prefer to sell cartridges that we have confidence in.
